There are several reasons why you might have a scar on your scalp. Maybe you've suffered an injury, been in an accident, or have a scar from a hair transplant. Scars on the scalp, beard, or eyebrows can be hidden with hair transplant surgery.
It is possible to implant hair follicles into scar tissue, but it is more difficult due to a reduced level of blood supply and supporting tissue. Despite this, follicles grafted from the donor area into a scar must grow gradually over 12 months to hide the scar.
Insufficient blood supply can affect both the rate of hair growth and the chances of graft survival. The blood supply to scars on the scalp can vary significantly depending on their type, so there is no guarantee that a hair transplant can completely hide a scar.
Whether someone is suitable for hair scar repair will depend on several factors. For example, if you have an inflammatory disease, it is recommended to wait at least 2 years of disease inactivity before undergoing this procedure. This is to ensure that diseases such as lichen planopilaris, psoriasis, and discoid lupus erythematosus are not active when the procedure is performed.
There are also certain types of scars that may mean you are not a suitable candidate for hair scar repair. If the scar is too thick (hypertrophic), the blood supply may be too limited for the grafted hair to grow and function properly. At our hair transplant clinic, you can discuss your suitability for hair scar repair and any cosmetic considerations in an initial consultation with a surgeon.
An FUE hair transplant on a scar can take between 1 and 6 hours to complete.
We can also hide long FUT scars with FUE hair transplant surgery. This will involve relocating individual follicles from the back and sides of the scalp and inserting them into a long linear scar produced by a FUT hair transplant. By grafting hairs into the long FUT scar, we can help hide its appearance.
Risks of hair scar repair are similar to those of conventional FUE hair transplant (see section).
